Goal Kicking Technique

As one of the most experienced fullbacks in the Premiership, Matt Burke is the ideal kicking coach for any players.

So, let’s go through the technique for kicking at goal!

Position ball
  • Line up the ball to the target
  • Make sure this is exactly the same each time for consistency of the kick
Walk back
  • From the ball walk back 45° to a distance you feel comfortable with.
  • For me, it is 4 steps
Approach ball
  • Approach the ball with a nice rhythm, not too fast, not too slow Strike the ball with your instep
  • Foot pointed down and out
Follow through past the ball Don’t stop on the point of contact
  • Follow through past the ball...
  • Finishing at the target
  • Keep your head down and your left shoulder forward (if you’re right footed like me)
  • This will help to ensure a solid contact whilst maintaining your balance

Goal Kicking Goal Kicking Practice Drill

Here is my favourite drill to practice kicking at goal. Start simple and progress when you feel comfortable.

This drill is really useful in giving you a direct indication as to if you are hitting the ball straight enough.

  • Place your ball on the kicking tee on the goal line 20m away from the post
  • Try to hit the near side post, side on
  • Aim to have the ball within 2 metres of the post either side
  • For progression– narrow your margins or move the ball further away from the post along the goal line
